“One change leaves the way open for the introduction of others.” -Niccolo Machiavelli
Hi! My name is Alison Johnson and I am one of the partners here at Luxuria Residences. Let me introduce myself and my story to you.
Rewind time. . .
In January of 2014 while my husband started his tour with the State Department in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. I, along with my husband and three kids; ages four, three, and three all were living our best lives in Dushanbe. During Christmas of 2016, we got the best surprise that we were having our 4th baby! Woohoo! All good until I realized that I’d have to leave the home I had since 2014 to return Stateside on medevac to have the baby. Where would I return home to? I had no baby stuff with me. What was going to happen with my other three children? Where was I to go stay for only a few months? I need an insane number of beds for all the little people. A million thoughts began to fill my head but one was always at the top: What was I going to do?!
I immediately began searching for a place to live. Should I live in a hotel? Furnished apartment? Regular apartment? I have no idea where to start but I finally settled on the idea of a furnished apartment. I settled on a furnished apartment in Tysons Corner, Virginia that was directly across from Tysons Mall. I booked with a large well known company and when I left Dushanbe with my three young kids, I set out on an adventure that even I couldn’t make up.
I arrived to my new apartment after two flights and travel time totaling nearly twenty-seven hours. We were tired, jetlagged, dirty from travel but excited to start our new adventure. I got to the apartment and a dark cloud soon swooped in. . . The apartment was filthy complete with dust balls and previous tenants trash. The bed configuration that I had requested and confirmed was not done correctly leaving my son with no bed. The towels were gross and low quality. The washing machine was full of mold. I immediately contacted the company and told them off this nightmare and I was assured it would be remedied as soon as possible. A few days went bye the day of remedy came. I now had to leave with the children so the apartment could be cleaned and the proper beds brought in. I returned later to find the apartment door wide open and everyone gone. That’s right. The company workers had left the door wide open – not just unlocked but wide open. My passports, documents, clothes, and everything that I had was there for anyone to take. I again called this company and was furiously wanting answers. They gave me some points to hotel chain as an apology an let me out of my contract knowing I would be moving elsewhere.
Upon asking around, I found a husband and wife who had a furnished apartment business. Upscale. Clean. 3 bedrooms. Furnished. Did I mention clean? I immediately got in touch with them and suddenly my dark cloud had moved over. I moved out of that filthy apartment into a penthouse, three bedroom, two bathroom, gorgeous unit. Everything was within my lodging per diem, everything was done exactly to my request, and nothing was overlooked. I brought my 4th baby home to that apartment we called home for nearly six months. We have tons of pictures and memories from that place that became home.
I remember telling that wife at the time – One day someone should start a business and help government people, diplomats, or anyone in need of a home. The business model based on customer service and customization that would beat out all the competitors.
Today, I am proud to say that I am now partners with that wife in this business. Luxuria Residences was a labor of love and devotion. It was built out of necessity but grown with pride, dedication, and more love.
